This Leadpages button tutorial covers the part of a page that does the selling: what happens when someone clicks. Buttons, images and text can all send visitors to another page, a section further down, a pop-up form or an outside site, and the countdown widget adds a deadline that can redirect or reveal content. Settings differ between builders, so each section names the Classic Builder or Page Studio, the two with full button documentation in the help center.
Buttons and Links in Brief
- Classic click events: pop-up, Calendly pop-up, page section, landing page or external URL.
- Page Studio links: link to a page, jump to a section or open an external URL, including phone, SMS, email and WhatsApp links.
- New Window and Nofollow toggles are available for outside links.
- Countdown timers: standard, daily or evergreen, with a redirect when they reach zero.
- Every button needs a link; an unlinked button does nothing.
Link a Button in the Classic Builder

- Click the button, or hover and click the edit icon. The panel can be dragged by its upper-left corner if it covers the page.
- Set the click event. Hover and choose Edit Click Event (or Add Click Event on a new button).
- Pick the action: Pop-up, usually holding an opt-in form; Calendly pop-up for booking; Page section to scroll down the same page; Landing page for another Leadpages page; or External URL for any other address.
- For a URL or landing page, turn on New Window to open it in a new tab, and Use Nofollow if the target is a link you do not want to vouch for in search.
- Optional: tick "Count this button click as a page conversion" for external URL and pop-up clicks, but not when the pop-up holds a form, or one opt-in counts twice.
- Update the page and click every button on the live version.
Images link the same way: select the image, click the link icon in its toolbar and choose a pop-up, Calendly pop-up, page section, landing page or external URL. To remove a link from an image, pick a different radio option.
Style Buttons Once for the Whole Page
The Classic button widget has a primary and a secondary global style. Set them under Styles in the left sidebar (Buttons tab), or click a custom button and choose Use as Primary Style, and every button, form and checkout widget using that style updates together. Individual options include flat, outline or gradient styles, square, rounded or pill corners, text formatting, size and Full Width. An Animation tab adds motion on hover or autoplay; use it on one main button at most.
Link Buttons, Images and Text in Page Studio
In Page Studio, images, buttons, text and countdowns all take links from the Interaction section of the Edit panel. The Event dropdown offers:
| Event | Use it for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Link to a page | Another published Page Studio page | Pick it from the list |
| Jump to a section | Scroll links and "back to top" | Rename containers in the Layers panel first, or every option reads "Container" |
| Open external URL | Other sites, checkout links, pop-up URLs | New window and nofollow options available |
| Open external URL with tel:, SMS: or mailto: | Call, text and email buttons | Depends on the visitor's device and email app |
| Open external URL with https://wa.me/ | WhatsApp chat | Number in international format |
| No link option | Removing a link | Use this rather than leaving a broken URL |
Page Studio buttons start attached to the page's style kit, which limits changes to type, text, size and width. Detach a button for full styling, knowing it will no longer follow style kit changes. Alignment comes from the button's parent container, so move or align the container rather than the button.
In the newer Leadpages app, select a button or text and set its link in the Inspector Panel, where a new-tab option is available. Its Add panel also offers Checkout buttons for Stripe or PayPal.
Add a Plain Text Link or Scroll Link
For an in-sentence link, select the words in a text widget and use the editor's link option. In Page Studio, link text through the Interaction section; pasting a URL into the text does not make it clickable, and links cannot contain HTML. For a scroll link, pick Page section (Classic) or Jump to a section (Page Studio) and choose the target. Page Studio adds the container's ID to the URL, and that ID cannot be changed to the section's name. On mobile, Classic pages that use device-specific sections can break section links, so test them on a phone; the mobile editing guide covers why.

- On-page pop-up (Classic): choose Pop-up as the click event and edit the form inside it, as shown in the forms guide.
- Standalone pop-up: Classic buttons cannot point at a Conversion Tools pop-up directly; paste the pop-up's code in an HTML widget instead. In Page Studio, add the pop-up's URL as an external link and its script under Settings, then Scripts. The pop-ups guide covers building them.
- Checkout: use a checkout widget for on-page payments, or link a button to a checkout page with an external URL. See Leadpages Stripe checkouts and upsells and order bumps.
- Third-party buttons such as payment or booking buttons with their own code cannot be attached to a Leadpages button. Paste their code into an HTML widget or element.
Pop-up links redirect rather than open in Page Studio's preview, so always test them on the published page.
Add a Countdown Timer
Both builders have a countdown with three types: Standard ends at a set date and time, Daily resets at the same time each day, and Evergreen gives each new visitor their own countdown of a set length.
- Add the countdown widget (Classic) or element (Page Studio) and open its options.
- Choose the type and set the end date and time or the evergreen duration. Dates use your computer's time zone, so every visitor sees the same deadline, and only future dates are accepted. Classic accepts typed dates in MM/DD/YYYY format.
- Set what happens at zero. Classic offers Redirect to a URL or landing page, plus Appearance options to Remain, Show or Hide page sections. Page Studio offers Stay on page, Select page or Open external link, but cannot show or hide sections.
- Style it. Classic numbers can be Unstyled, Block or Boxes with square, rounded or circular corners; the font comes from Page Styles, then Type Styles. Page Studio unit labels can be Default ("Days") or Short ("D").
Avoid redirects on daily timers, since visitors can reach the original page again a moment later. Evergreen timers pair well with a redirect to an expired-offer page. Keep deadlines real: a timer that resets for the same visitor erodes trust quickly.
Show a Button Only After a Delay
No button has a delay setting, but the Classic countdown can do it. Put the delayed button (or a late offer) in its own section, add a short evergreen countdown, and set that section to Show when the timer expires. The visitor watches a video or reads the pitch first, and the button appears afterwards.
Fix Common Button and Timer Problems
- Button does nothing: it has no click event, or the link is not a complete, valid URL.
- Evergreen timer not resetting for you: it remembers your browser. Page Studio timers restart on a new browser, device or cleared cache, so test in a private window. Classic lets you reset the timer for all visitors after changing its duration.
- Timer stacked vertically: its column is too narrow; widen it, or resize with the column divider or space widgets in a single-column row.
- Double conversions: turn off click counting on buttons that open form pop-ups.
To measure clicks and outbound traffic beyond Leadpages' own counts, set up events with the tracking guide.

How do I make a Leadpages button open a link in a new window?
In the Classic Builder, set the button's click event to External URL or Landing page and turn on New Window. In Page Studio, choose Open external URL in the Interaction section and enable the new-window option.
How do I add a plain text link in Leadpages?
Select the words in a text widget and use the link option. In Page Studio, select the text and set the link in the Interaction section; pasting a URL into the text alone does not make it clickable.
Can I time when a button shows up in Leadpages?
There is no delay setting on the button itself. In the Classic Builder, put the button in its own section and set a countdown widget's Appearance option to Show that section when the timer expires. A short evergreen timer works as a per-visitor delay.
Why is my Leadpages evergreen timer not starting fresh?
Evergreen timers remember a visitor in the browser, so you see your old countdown when you revisit. Test in a private window or another browser. In the Classic Builder you can reset the timer for all visitors after changing its duration.
Can a Leadpages button count as a conversion?
In the Classic Builder, yes, for external URL, pop-up and Calendly pop-up click events. Do not count clicks on a button that opens a form pop-up, or one sign-up will record twice. Page Studio button clicks cannot currently be counted as conversions.
How do I add a print button?
Leadpages has no print widget. Paste a small HTML button that calls the browser's print function into an HTML widget, as described in the custom code guide, and test it on the live page.
